Bentons Place is understood to be the oldest continuously-inhabited house in Sussex. It is one of several manor houses in the parish of Shipley. The moated manor house is known as “Bentons Place” is recorded on the site in the Domesday Book of 1086. The property takes its name from Thomas de Bayntune, one of William the Conqueror's generals, who was granted it as part of a much larger estate in reward for his part in the successful Norman Conquest in 1066. The property has had only two owners in the past approximately one hundred years and, the present owner has documents showing the succession of owners from 1073 until the present time. The property will have been altered over the centuries, and the present structure is largely of Tudor (16th century) origin.
